Atkinson's breakthrough came with the 2004 detective novel "Case Histories," which introduced the romantically melancholic private investigator Jackson Brodie. Two indifferently received novels followed, including "Human Croquet" (1997), the chronicle of a once-great English family recounted and relived by a time-traveling heroine. It won the Whitbread prize for both first novel and book of the year. Cunningly joined the conventions of a young woman's coming-of-age story with a historical survey of England in the tumultuous 20th century.
